About ProperPage
There’s another way to get a website.
Website builders. WordPress. Freelancers. Agencies. AI. There are more ways to get a website than ever before, and none of them are inherently wrong. ProperPage takes some of the best ideas from all of them and puts professional experience in charge of the result.
You could do it yourself.
And you might do a perfectly good job.
Website builders and tools like WordPress have made it possible for almost anyone to get a website online. Pick a template, add your content, move a few things around and, with enough patience, you can build something entirely usable.
But the subscription price isn’t the whole cost.
You still have to learn the software, make decisions about structure, layout, typography, imagery and content, test it on different devices and work out what to do when something doesn’t behave as expected.
If you run a business, your time has a value. Hours spent learning how to build a website are hours you aren’t spending doing the thing your customers actually pay you for.
At ProperPage, we work directly with the code that all websites rely on. We’re not restricted by templates, builder components or third-party widgets that are almost, but not quite, what your site needs. We can use HTML, CSS, JavaScript and whatever other tools are appropriate, with full control over how the site looks and behaves. You’re paying us for that expertise and the work of building it properly — but because we build it once, you only pay that build cost once.
You could use a traditional agency.
And for some projects, that is exactly the right choice.
A good agency can bring together designers, developers, copywriters, photographers, account managers and other specialists. If you’re launching a major brand, building a complex online service or running a large campaign, that breadth of expertise can be valuable.
But it can be disproportionate when what you actually need is a really good five-page website for your business, trade or club.
There’s nothing unreasonable about an agency charging several thousand pounds for a project if that price reflects the people and process involved. The question is whether your website genuinely needs that much organisation around it.
A freelancer can often reduce that cost, but the service varies enormously. Some are experienced designers and developers; others may simply be using the same builders, themes and plugins that you could use yourself, but doing the assembly on your behalf.
ProperPage is deliberately smaller and simpler. You get professional design and development expertise, without automatically paying for a production model designed for much larger projects.
You could ask AI to build it.
Increasingly, you can. And we think that’s a good thing.
AI can write code, suggest layouts, draft content and produce imagery in a fraction of the time those jobs once required. It’s one of the reasons ProperPage can produce professional work much more efficiently than was possible a few years ago.
But AI is not the same thing as expertise.
It can produce a layout that looks right until you open it on a different screen size. It can generate code that works but could be cleaner. It can misunderstand what you meant, miss an important detail or give somebody six fingers.
The difference is what happens next.
We use AI to reduce manual labour, not to remove care from the process. That means more of our time can go into the little details that actually affect the finished website, without inflating the cost.
But we never use the technology to do something that we can't already do with our humans. When used to do something that you can't do - you have to accept the results that you get. When you use it to augment skills that you already have, production time speeds up and we get more time to spend in the little details.
Or you could get a ProperPage.
And not have to worry about your website.
ProperPage takes the best parts of all of those approaches and combines them into one straightforward product.
You get the convenience of handing the job to someone else, the flexibility of a website built directly with code, and the speed and efficiency that modern development tools and AI now make possible.
We use those tools to reduce the manual work involved, then apply the experience and judgement needed to turn the result into a finished website.
We automate the labour where we can and keep the judgement where it matters.
That’s how we can provide professional design and development without the traditional agency-sized process or bill.
And once it’s live, it stays our problem.
The upfront fee pays for designing and building your website. Website Care means we continue taking responsibility for it afterwards.
We host it, monitor it, maintain the technical side and look after the security and infrastructure behind it.
Reasonable ongoing changes are included too. If you need to change a price, replace a photograph, update some wording or add a small piece of information, just ask us and we’ll take care of it.
Bigger changes, new pages or substantial new functionality are different, and we’ll agree a price with you before doing the work.
You shouldn’t need to learn how websites work, remember how to update one, or find somebody to fix it six months later. You run your business. We’ll look after the website.
